Make Your Own Sofa Back Cushions

Sofa back cushions are an essential part of any living room, providing both comfort and style. If you're looking to give your sofa a fresh look, or if your old cushions are starting to show their age, making your own is a great option. It's a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours, and it's a great way to save money. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make your own sofa back cushions:

Materials you'll need:

  • Fabric: Choose a fabric that is durable and easy to clean. Upholstery-weight fabrics are a good option, as they are designed to withstand everyday use.
  • Foam: You'll need foam that is at least 4 inches thick. The density of the foam will determine how firm the cushions are. For a medium-firm cushion, use a foam with a density of 1.8 pounds per cubic foot (PCF).
  • Pillow forms: These will help to give the cushions their shape and support. Choose pillow forms that are the same size as the foam.
  • Zipper: Choose a zipper that is at least as long as the width of the cushion. A hidden zipper is a good option, as it will be less visible.
  • Thread: Choose a thread that matches the color of the fabric.
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

Instructions:

1. Cut the fabric and foam. Cut two pieces of fabric and two pieces of foam to the desired size of the cushion. The fabric should be about 2 inches larger than the foam on all sides. 2. Sew the zipper. Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together, and sew the zipper in place along one of the long sides. 3. Insert the foam. Turn the fabric right side out, and insert the foam into the cover. 4. Sew the pillow forms. Place the two pillow forms inside the cover, and sew around the edges of the cover to secure them. 5. Insert the cushion into the sofa. Place the cushion into the sofa, and zip it closed.

Tips:

* If you're using a patterned fabric, make sure to match the pattern on the two pieces of fabric before sewing them together. * You can use different types of foam to create different levels of firmness in the cushions. For a softer cushion, use a foam with a lower density. For a firmer cushion, use a foam with a higher density. * If you don't have a sewing machine, you can hand-sew the cushions. However, it will take longer and the stitches may not be as strong. * You can add decorative touches to the cushions, such as piping or buttons.
