DIY Sofa Chair Cover: A Step-by-Step Guide
Transforming your sofa or chair's appearance and protecting it from wear and tear is simple and affordable with a DIY sofa chair cover. With a few materials, some basic sewing skills, and a bit of creativity, you can create a custom cover that perfectly matches your style and needs.
Materials You'll Need:
- Fabric (type and amount will vary depending on the size and shape of your sofa/chair)
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Scissors
- Sewing machine and thread
- Zipper (optional, but recommended for easy on/off)
- Cording or ribbon (for decorative trim, optional)
Step 1: Measuring and Cutting the Fabric
Measure the length, width, and height of your sofa or chair. Add 6-8 inches to each measurement for overhang and seam allowance. Transfer these measurements to the fabric and cut out the pieces.
Step 2: Creating the Sofa Cover Base
Place the fabric pieces together, right sides facing. Sew along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open for the zipper.
Step 3: Inserting the Zipper
Measure and cut the zipper to the length of the top edge of the sofa cover. Pin the zipper in place and sew it around the edges, leaving a small opening in the middle.
Step 4: Sewing the Cushion Covers (If Applicable)
For chairs with separate cushions, cut out fabric pieces for the cushions using the same measuring technique as for the sofa cover. Sew the pieces together, leaving an opening for turning, and insert the cushions.
Step 5: Hemming the Cover
Fold over the edges of the sofa cover and the cushion covers (if applicable) by 1-2 inches and press. Fold over again and stitch close to the edge to create a hem.
Step 6: Adding Decorative Trim (Optional)
If desired, use cording or ribbon to create decorative trim around the edges of the sofa cover or cushion covers. Pin the trim in place and sew it on securely.
Step 7: Finalizing the Cover
Turn the sofa cover right side out and insert the cushion covers. Zip up the sofa cover and enjoy your newly transformed furniture!
Tips for a Perfect Fit:
- Use a sturdy fabric that can withstand regular use.
- Measure carefully and add sufficient seam allowance.
- If you're unsure about the fit, make a muslin mock-up before cutting the actual fabric.
- For a snug fit, use elastic or drawstring around the edges.
