How to Build a Murphy Bed with Sofa

A Murphy bed with sofa is a great space-saving solution for small apartments or homes. It's a bed that folds up into a cabinet when not in use, and it can be easily converted into a sofa when you need it. Building a Murphy bed with sofa is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend.

Materials you will need:

  • 1 sheet of 3/4-inch plywood (4 feet by 8 feet)
  • 2 pieces of 1x4 lumber (8 feet long)
  • 2 pieces of 1x6 lumber (8 feet long)
  • 1 piece of 1x8 lumber (8 feet long)
  • 2 pieces of 1/2-inch plywood (2 feet by 4 feet)
  • 1 piece of 1/4-inch plywood (2 feet by 4 feet)
  • 1 pair of heavy-duty hinges
  • 1 pair of gas springs
  • 1 sofa bed mechanism
  • Wood screws
  • Nails

Tools you will need:

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Countersink bit
  • Clamps
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Instructions:

1. Cut the plywood to size. The following pieces are needed:

  • 2 pieces of 3/4-inch plywood for the sides (4 feet by 8 feet)
  • 2 pieces of 3/4-inch plywood for the top and bottom (4 feet by 4 feet)
  • 1 piece of 1/2-inch plywood for the back (2 feet by 4 feet)
  • 1 piece of 1/4-inch plywood for the front (2 feet by 4 feet)

2. Assemble the frame. Attach the sides to the top and bottom with wood screws. Make sure the frame is square.

3. Install the back. Attach the back to the frame with wood screws. Make sure the back is flush with the edges of the frame.

4. Install the front. Attach the front to the frame with wood screws. Make sure the front is flush with the edges of the frame.

5. Install the hinges. Attach the hinges to the inside of the frame and the outside of the front. Make sure the hinges are aligned.

6. Install the gas springs. Attach the gas springs to the inside of the frame and the bottom of the front. Make sure the gas springs are aligned.

7. Install the sofa bed mechanism. Attach the sofa bed mechanism to the inside of the frame. Make sure the sofa bed mechanism is aligned.

8. Test the Murphy bed with sofa. Open and close the Murphy bed to make sure it works properly.

9. Finish the Murphy bed with sofa. You can paint or stain the Murphy bed to match your décor.
