How to Recover an RV Sofa Bed: A Comprehensive Guide

RV sofa beds are a convenient and space-saving solution for cozy living in your mobile home. However, over time, their upholstery can become worn, faded, or torn, compromising both aesthetics and comfort. Recovering your RV sofa bed is a cost-effective way to restore its functionality and refresh its appearance.

Materials You'll Need

  • Upholstery fabric (amount depends on sofa bed size)
  • Heavy-duty upholstery thread
  • Upholstery staples
  • Staple gun
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Foam padding (optional)

Step 1: Dismantling the Sofa Bed

Begin by removing the cushions and disassembling the sofa bed frame. This may involve unbolting, unscrewing, or unzipping various sections.

Step 2: Stripping the Old Upholstery

Using pliers or a screwdriver, carefully remove the staples holding the old upholstery in place. Pull the fabric away from the frame and discard it.

Step 3: Assessing the Foam Padding

Inspect the foam padding underneath the old upholstery. If it has any tears, lumps, or indentations, replace it with new foam of the same thickness and density.

Step 4: Cutting the New Upholstery Fabric

Measure the sofa bed frame and add approximately 5-6 inches on each side for overhang. Cut the fabric accordingly.

Step 5: Stapling the Front Panel

Position the fabric over the front panel of the sofa bed frame, ensuring it's centered and taut. Staple the fabric securely around the edges, spacing the staples about 2 inches apart.

Step 6: Stapling the Sides and Back

Wrap the fabric around the sides and back of the sofa bed frame, tucking in any excess around the corners. Staple the fabric securely, overlapping the edges of the front panel.

Step 7: Re-Assembling the Sofa Bed

After recovering all sides of the sofa bed, reassemble it by reversing the disassembly steps. Insert the cushions and any decorative pillows.

Tips

  • Use a heavy-duty upholstery stapler to ensure a secure hold.
  • Stretch the fabric firmly before stapling to prevent wrinkles or sagging.
  • For a more professional finish, use a fabric steamer to remove any wrinkles.
  • Choose an upholstery fabric that is both durable and visually appealing.
  • If you're not confident in your DIY skills, consider hiring a professional upholsterer.

By following these steps, you can restore your RV sofa bed to its former glory and enjoy a comfortable and stylish space for relaxation and entertaining.
